The field of Public Policy in India is growing at a fast pace. One can witness this boom by analyzing the number of universities offering a full fledged professional course in the field along with the companies or organizations that have started hiring for various policy posts, realizing the need for such a department.
Today we have more than 100 part-time courses and 250 full time master’s courses being offered to policy enthusiasts. India is also fast - catching up with the universities abroad and thus the universities here are also launching unique courses in the field - where a course is being inaugurated almost every week! All of the major universities, even the IITs are beginning to offer courses in public policy. This shows the importance of the field along with the kind of interest that it has garnered.
Apart from pursuing public policy for general interest and knowledge, many students are beginning to carve out a career in the field as well. Being a dynamic and diverse field, one can find opportunities in several domains based on their interest - irrespective of the academic background they come from. One can not only work as policy researchers, consultants or young fellows with the government or government supported organizations but can also explore opportunities in a corporate or a non-governmental setup. Working as policy consultants with consulting organizations like Chase India has been of great interest to various students - all from diverse backgrounds. Other than this, one can also work as policy implementers, analysts, research associates, policy advocates or impact assessors with various non-governmental organizations. From making policy to actually implementing and evaluating its impact, one can find several opportunities through which they can practice their interest.
Through these developments one can clearly see what the future holds. Time is not far when almost half of the population would want to pursue a career in public policy or when students in their higher secondary itself will be informed of such a career path.
